Here's a video of a live Hayes Carll performance of what Don Imus called the greatest country record ever on the radio this morning. After having heard it twice (and he played it a lot more than that during the course of his show), I'm tempted to agree.
Well, not really. Is it better than "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" or Johnny Cash's version of "Cocaine Blues" from Live at Folsom Prison? No. But still, what a beautiful, hilarious song. Compared to everything else you're likely to hear on the creatively comatose format of country radio, it's like two lungfuls of oxygen after suffocating your whole goddamn life.
Another slight overstatement. I'm sorry.
Enjoy Hayes Carll singing "She Left Me for Jesus."
