Am I a Culture Warrior[tm]?
Monday, September 18th, 2006 | 03:39 pm [commentary]
Steve

I usually keep away from things like this, but this one I couldn’t resist.  I was listening to the radio for about thirty seconds today in the truck as I was in the process of changing CDs, and I heard Bill O’Reilly say that he had a quiz up on his website that would tell me whether or not I was a Culture Warrior[tm], which also just happens to be the title of O’Reilly’s new book.  So after I got home and put some new plants in the fish tank, I signed on and took the quiz.  Five yes or no questions, the answers to which determined whether or not I was a mighty Culture Warrior[tm].  I’ve got the actual quiz linked here, if you want to take it yourself.  Below are the five questions, and my answers.

  1. Do you believe in "income redistribution"--that is, the government taxing affluent Americans at a higher proportional rate in order to fund entitlements to the less well off?

Yes.

  1. Do you believe the definition of marriage should include homosexuals?

Yes.

  1. Do you think suspected terrorists captured overseas are entitled to Geneva Convention protections-that is, the same rights that military people are afforded?

Yes.

  1. Do you believe that the USA, in general, is harmful to the world?

No.

  1. Are you against states legally mandating that parents be informed when their underage daughters have abortions?

No.

And here is my result:

Are you a "Culture Warrior," or are you in the secular-progressive (S-P) camp?

Based on the answers you gave...

You have some S-P beliefs, but have not yet committed to either side.

Here are three things about this test that I find hilarious:  first, the right-wing side gets the cool, evocative name – they’re the Culture Warriors[tm], baby, whereas the opposing side gets the boring clinical name – they’re the secular-progressives.  Second, that “yet” in my result.  I have some S-P beliefs, but I have not yet committed to either side.  But I’m going to, right?  It couldn’t possibly be that I actually believe in my answers, because that would mean I’m not a perfect fit on either side, which would mean the entire premise of a two-party/two-ideology political system is irrational, or as Pap might have said, fucking horseshit.  The third thing that strikes me as funny about this is the fact that you can only answer “yes” or “no” to complicated questions involving the legal rights of captured terrorists and America’s place in the world.  You know, if I were a little more cynical, I might think O’Reilly just cooked up this whole quiz thing and plugged it on his show as a ploy to push his new book.  But that can’t be right – O’Reilly isn’t like that; he’s not in it for the money – he’s on our side.

Nope. I also believe in racial and sexual equality, but I'm not black or a woman, either. Am I freaking you out?
