Last night at the Alfred E. Smith dinner in New York, John McCain and Barack Obama both delivered funny monologues — actually funny, not “funny.” The tone was like a celebrity roast, only it was a white tie affair, so both guys were dressed up like upper crust douchebags. I heard a few pundits say after watching it that they wished the debates could have been like this. I must heartily agree.

Both guys were funny — McCain’s closing bit, introducing Obama and overhyping his speech as “the funniest fifteen minutes of your life or any other” was brilliant, and a reminder of why I still like this guy even though he’s been running a dick campaign the last few weeks. Barack’s stuff was great, too, especially the Superman reference and the revelation of his real middle name. Can’t say I had a problem with that.
