I have mixed feelings about Veterans Day. On the one hand, Dad and Pap both served in the U.S. Navy, and I know of at least one ancestor who fought in the American Civil War. The military history of my family is something I am very proud of. On the other hand, I am a disrespectful, snickering prick.
So I came up with two images to mark Veterans Day 2009. The first is a very solemn and reverent image, incorporating the text of that immortal poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. The second, because the last thing I would ever want anyone to write on my tombstone is “Here Lies a Reverent Man,” isn’t.
