Okay, here now is your homework for the next month:
Draw Muhammad, and make that drawing public on May 20, 2010.
Someone (possibly Dan Savage, or Molly Norris, the credited artist on the poster down there), eager to take the bold and necessary step that Comedy Central, all but a few newspapers around the world, and pretty much everyone else have been unwilling to take (that step being giving the finger to anyone who threatens violence over a depiction of the mytho-historical prophet of Islam, Muhammad) has declared May 20 the first annual Everybody Draw Muhammad Day. I intend to participate, and so should you.
All you have to do is draw Muhammad. Draw him however you want — a realistic rendering, a cartoon, something goofier as suggested by the poster — anything. Then, on May 20, make that drawing public. Post it to your blog or your Facebook or MySpace profile. Or email it to Michael Moynihan of Reason Magazine, who has promised to post the best entries on his Hit & Run blog on the day.
Or send it my way, if you have nowhere else to post it. Post your Muhammad drawing in the comments section here, or email it to me directly, and I will post your Muhammad along with mine on May 20.
If you need a little inspiration, here are how some others have depicted Muhammad:
