Because what says Happy Holidays more than a video about a nine year-old wrestling match featuring a guy who went on to murder his family and hang himself?

My sentiments exactly.

I'd argue that this wasn't a good period for the WWF at all. Austin had a good hell gimmick but when The Rock left he had no good faces to compete against. HHH was primed for a face turn but instead he teamed with Austin and did everything eh could to overshadow him. So instead they had the two of them feud with Undertaker and Kane when Austin/UT had been done to death. At the same time Angle and Benoit had kind of a lame feud over Angle's medals but at least the matches were good. Other than that everything seemed to be languishing.

Anyway, as perhaps one of the only other former wrestling fans on the blog I'm looking forward to this series.

I look back fondly at mid-2001, despite the disappointing Invasion angle, because I dug Austin's heel run so much, and because, due to Triple H's injury during this tag match and Rock's spring hiatus, Austin spent most of the year working against Benoit, Jericho, and Angle.

Granted, the Invasion was a mess, and by the time Wrestlemania X-8 came around this whole period had been largely forgotten. Austin was back to being a babyface, Jericho was a heel waiting to drop the belt to Triple H, and Hogan, Hall and Nash were getting most of the attention. But this was a period where I really looked forward to the shows, and where some of my favorite guys were consistently working on top.

While I'm on the subject, I have always felt that not doing Austin vs. Angle at 'Mania was a big missed opportunity. With how tormented Angle had been with Austin's "WHAT?!" catchphrase, I thought the big blow-off to that between face Austin and heel Angle would have been a much more exciting way to go than Austin vs. Hall.

Angle vs Austin would have been a better match, but they had 4 matches against each other on PPV between Summerslam and the end of the year (and one high profile title match on Raw) so it might have been a little stale by then. I thought that Austin and Angle vs The Outsiders would have been an interesting Wrestlemania match.

Hey! Austin/Angle vs. The Outsiders. Now that's some quality armchair booking, my friend. I would have totally dug that more than Austin vs. Hall and Angle vs. Kane. I mean, the match may well have sucked, but it would have been a much hotter build-up, one would think.

Yeah, the tag match probably would have been slightly worse than Angle/Kane (who had a shockingly good match on Smackdown during the Invasion, IIRC) and slightly better than Austin/Hall, presuming Nash could avoid tearing a quad. At least you could have still gotten Hall's crazy selling of the stunner and Angle would have been willing to put someone over so the nWo angle wouldn't be completely dead in the water after Hogan's turn.
