God Isn’t Humble and Neither Are His People

I don't see how anybody could read the bible and take from it that God is humble. And in the sense that Christians often see their religion as the one true religion, and even the rivalry among the Christian sects for which way is the best way to be a good Christian, is not humble. But, I think you short-change the teachings of Christianity a bit here. There are plenty of stories and guidance urging humility in the Bible. Yes, I know, for every story that teaches humility there's another that teaches vengeance or some other ugliness that almost negates all the good and moral teachings, but let's, for arguments sake, forget that point for now.
There is the "turn the other cheek" thing, -that's humble. And there's the loving thy neighbor as thy self. Humble. And, what about the 'don't go wearing a sign around your neck that says, "Look at me! I'm fasting and proud of it!"' The bible also speaks of praying in private and also of women not adorning themselves with jewelry for reasons of humility. To Christians, even the story of Adam and Eve, Eve eating the apple and them suddenly becoming aware of their nakedness, is a lesson about the evils of pride. Jesus repeatedly tells his disciples to give up their worldly possessions and follow him in what by today's standards would be considered something of an alterno-hippy lifestyle. The bible also teaches that if you give to charity, you shouldn't boast about it. I'm sure there's plenty of other good examples, too. Look what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah when they got to big for their britches. And, The Tower of Babel? I'm just sayin.

God may not be humble, but he wants his people to be. The Bible makes that pretty clear.
