Steve's New Userpic
Last night I was a guest on the Biblethumpingwingnut Show, where I debated Christian apologist Sye Ten Bruggencate for about 30 minutes. Fellow atheist YouTubers Livelife8072 and TruthSurge also participated, and a good time was had by all. Here's the video, courtesy of Biblethumpingwingnut's channel. My bit starts at 00:26:27 or so.

Steve(from debate): "Let's say I said, 'Ok Sye I can't justify my reasoning without employing my reasoning. It's a vicious circular argument.' What would your response be? Where does that get you?"

Sye: "You know what would my response would be? Repent."

Jebus, I almost blew my coffee through my nose I was laughing so hard. I admit he was kind of a tough nut to crack. I think you did better than the first guy, no offense to him. Honestly, I would love it if you could do a video that critiques and explains this entire debate.

He seemed like the school kid that responds, "I know you are but what am I?" to everything you throw at him. My response to his seeming tongue-twister "how can you use reason to justify reason," would be: it works. It's possible reason sucks or is invalid, but it built the pyramids, automobiles, planes, and the space shuttle. I'm just a weekend philosopher though so not sure how good that answer is.

But seriously, you need to do a vid on Sye and what's wrong with his logic. -- David W.

This is the dumbest argument I have ever heard. "God told me I'm right and you're wrong. ( fingers in ears) la-la-la-la-la." That this argument is given any philosophical weight at all, or is considered a position worth debating, is beyond me. Kudos to you for having the patience to deal with this guy in a civilized manor.

I mean when children grow up, they get to know that it's a lie right.

As another commenter said, kudos on your patience with that guy. Thats just one of the many reasons I listen to what you say, you stay calm and cool when surrounded by blathering morons. His main and ONLY line of defense seems to be asking the same unanswerable question with a louder voice. Then when you answer, he says you're not answering the right question. ( Goes to find a gun, places gun in mouth, realizes Sye has taught me that guns aren't "real" even though I can taste the metal )

I'd love to see you confront Sye in a video with some of your 5 Stupid Things lists that are religious in nature, and have him watch, then answer point by point. I know he was trying to pigeonhole you into the unwinnable debate of "I'm right and you're wrong because God told me I'm right and you just don't get it." Or more accurately, "I SEE DEAD PEOPLE." And it was hilarious how he would never directly answer a question but rather answer with a question, which always shows that a person is in a corner. So I believe you, or anyone with at least 2 functioning brain cells, could clobber him if he were required to ACTUALLY ANSWER any question.

I expected a little more out of TruthSurge. However, he raised the ONE issue that could have knocked it out of the park, but he didn't capitalize on it, by not asking the right way. How do today's Christians justify, that in all of humanity there have been countless gods and dieties that have all been tossed aside, that someday the Christian god will go by the wayside as well to make room for an even bigger and better god? The ancient Egyptians thought they were right for thousands of years, as did the Greeks, Romans, Nords, etc. And now their gods are in the dustbin of time. I would have asked Sye, hasn't all of recorded history shown that the idea of god is a passing fad?

Gods are the cosmic equivalent of Boy Bands. Back in the day, my little sister thought New Kids on the Block were FOREVER. Thats what the 12 posters in her room said. Such is God.

We can never rest until the Holy Bible is put on the bookshelves where it truly belongs, next to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

take care Steve, hope all is well with you and your family.
