Santa Barbara Shooting Reaction: What About Gun Rights?
Saturday, May 31st, 2014 | 02:34 pm (UTC)
An irritating trend I've noticed is that both the pro-gun crowd and the anti-feminist crowd are trying to pretend that the only, the ONLY issue is mental illness. As though we should just dismiss every other possible issue because "he's just a psycho". This allows them to avoid confronting the other important issues.

It's especially funny when anti-feminists do this, because I don't think it could be any more obvious that Elliot Rodger was extremely misogynist. (There's a part in his manifesto where he fantasizes about putting all women in concentration camps and starving them to death). And if a killer had such a vocal, hateful ideology about, say, black people, no one would hesitate to say that racism was a major factor. Yet for some reason, lots of people are saying, "He was just mentally ill! There's nothing more to it!"

That mental blind spot is revealing, and so is the way misogynists have responded to the #YesAllWomen posts by saying they hate men, when part of the #YesAllWomen message is that not all (or even most) men hurt women, but enough of them do for it to be a problem, and women have a lot more to fear from men than the other way around. It reminds me of back during the civil rights movement, when racists thought that an oppressed race demanding equality was an attempt to start a race war instead of end one. People couldn't see the problem due to their own privilege, or refused to. We're seeing the same thing again now.
