Us blogging types are supposed to link to each other and cross-reference the shit out of everything, right? Sometimes I feel I have failed in that very important duty of the blogger. I was reading over some articles just now, political stuff, and it occurred to me that I had an opportunity to ameliorate some of that failure. Afterall, if the writer of a blog with a microscopic readership cannot throw a few more viewers toward websites that routinely get hundreds of times his traffic, of what use is he?
Last week I read the Rolling Stone piece by Matt Taibbi where he attempts to explain just how the economy got to this point, citing the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which eliminated the legal separation between commercial (or lending) banks and investment banks, as a major cause of this whole mess. Today, there is this piece at Neo-Neocon, which takes a more detailed look at the repeal of Glass-Steagall, why its repeal was broadly supported by both major parties at the time, and how it might (or might not have) prevented the current crisis.
Then I checked out this article by my favorite Republican, David Frum. In this piece written for the National Post blog, David details why he became a conservative in the first place, why he still is one, and why he believes his party would be best served by turning away from the Limbaughs and Levins and toward something more realistic and relevant. He writes about the problems in his movement with great clarity, and is by far the most eloquent and respectable voice over there on the right wing of the American political spectrum.
Finally, there is this Vanity Fair article by one of my favorite people in the world, Christopher Hitchens. Here, Hitchens recounts how he was beaten up in Beirut on Valentines Day by a gang of Syrian Social Nationalists. The crime for which Hitchens was being punished: defacing a swastika on a Syrian Social Nationalist Party poster. Have you all seen his argument with Mos Def from Real Time with Bill Maher a few days ago? I might post that one on Friday. How do you not love this guy?
