Steve's New Userpic

Just so y’all know, I’ve changed my username here at LiveJournal from “nightwingwilson” to “stevelikescurse” (I know . . . they have a 15-character limit). Visitors to “nightwingwilson.livejournal.com” will be automatically re-directed, and if you get here via www.stevelikestocurse.com, nothing will change. But hey, I wanted to share.

I first started using some variation of “Nightwing Wilson” as my de facto internet handle way back in the mid-1990s. It started as a joke between me and Varjak. We first met at this awesome Batman website, The Dark Knight. It had a chat room, The Gotham Gossip, where I spent many an hour back in those days. Var and I were regulars, known to be buddies by just about everyone there. One day Var got the idea that it would be fun to pretend to have a major falling out, to get everyone else thinking that we had gone from best pals to sworn enemies over something totally trivial. This, really, is how we entertained ourselves back then.

So it was going to work like this: Varjak had arbitrarily decided at some point before this that “Nightwing,” which was my chat handle at the Goss (which is what all us hip cats called the Gotham Gossip for short), was my first name, and “Wilson” was my last name. Since that was like ten years ago and I’m still using it as my handle for virtually everything, you can probably guess how fucking hysterical I found that. Our phony argument was going to start with Varjak referring to me as Wilson, and me responding with “Don’t call me ‘Wilson,’ you son of a bitch.”

At the time we found this hilarious. And you know what? It was hilarious. Fuck you.

Was this the same chat room where you mocked a guy in a wheel chair who died? No wonder you two were so popular there.

Heh! Yeah. Those sure were the days . . .

I also thought it was funny to react with skepticism every time Patrick, the incredibly nice guy who ran the website, came into the chat and mentioned his then-newborn son. I'd always be like, "Hey, Patrick. How's the 'family'?" as if I doubted he had a son at all. This cracked me up more than I can tell you.

Heh. We rocked.

And to be fair, the chat room was gone before the guy in the wheelchair died, so there was no public mocking of his death.
