Sometime recently, when I wasn’t looking, the Herald-Mail decided to finally share some of its original submissions to Mail Call with the rest of the world. You can listen to them in a weekly segment of the newspaper’s HMTV section. It’s the bottom button on that navigation panel to the right of the video.
Unfortunately, this disproves one of my favorite theories of Rick Rottman, my fellow Hagerstown area blogger who writes the superb Bent Corner. Rick has said more than once that he wouldn’t be surprised if the calls printed in Mail Call weren’t from real people at all, but made up by members of the Herald-Mail’s staff to amuse themselves. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
There goes another comforting delusion.
I can’t decide which is the more shattering revelation: that Santa Claus isn’t real, or that the people who call into Mail Call are.
Speaking of which, the next edition of my Riffing on Mail Call video series should be done and up tomorrow. None of the calls featured in the Herald-Mail’s current video edition of Mail Call will be featured, because they aren’t nearly weird enough.
