The Joys and Sorrows of the Unaffiliated Voter

Pennsylvania has closed primaries as well. I don't have a huge issue with it, primarily because of various shenanigans (that's a technical term) that came up in the last primary, before the 2008 election. The one that stands out in my mind is a report from a voting board official who stated that a lifelong Republican asked her how she could go about switching her affiliation to the Democratic Party... But only for a single day. Clearly she didn't consider herself Democratic or carry any interest in registering as such. She just wanted to try to fuck up the Democratic primary by voting for whoever she considered to be the worst candidate. In my mind, that remains the best defense of closed primaries I have ever heard.

And, as I am not party-affiliated either, I rarely vote in the primaries either.
