Our very own Fucker got me started on this kick a few days ago when he posted
his list of the thirty greatest horror films of all time. I’ve written occasionally about films (good and bad) on my own blog for years, but I’ve never taken the time to come up with an ordered list of my favorite horror films. This is somewhat due to my feeling of late that lists like these always have a faint whiff of bullshit about them. What criteria place Phantasm at #28, and Seven at #29? If they were to switch places, or if you were to swap one out in favor of Carnival of Souls, say, would the list be any different?

The real value of lists like this, it seems to me, is in giving people who are interested in this sort of thing something to talk about. So with that in mind, I was going to write a top ten list, but not rank the films in any particular order. But then Ashley (my life’s love and star of our upcoming short film, Toby Benson Wants His Money) advised against it, saying that reading through to see what the next film is all the way up to #1 is one of the things that makes these lists fun. So I’m ranking my list afterall. It’s a top ten rather than a top thirty, because I have an insufferable need to comment on shit, and a paragraph each for thirty movies is more than I want to write and more, I expect, than you would want to read.

Just keep in mind that the rankings relative to one another don’t mean a hell of a lot until you at least get up to the top three or so. And even they, as with the Fucker’s mighty list, are subject to change at any time.

Have you ever seen any of Dario Argento's work? He's easily the most divisive horror director around and I'd be interested in hearing where you'd land.
