Steve Watches Wrestling #2: Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper, Wrestlemania VIII

Steve, I was a fan from like '87 and kind of stopped watching sometime in the mid to late 90's - about a decade. Some of the best matches I watched were the first few times they did the Survior Series and Royal Rumble. Great stuff. I was so bummed when they discontinued Saturday Night's Main Event. That show was unstoppable! There were some really great tag teams back then. Remember Hart Foundation vs. whoever? Demolition vs. Brainbusters? British Bulldogs vs. the Islanders? Big Boss Man & One Man Gang (later Akeem)? Earthquake & Typhoon (The Natural Disasters). Those guys were just so overweight, that it was a technique unto itself, using sheer body mass to defeat opponents.

Do you remember Hart entering the ring first during the opening battle royal match at WM4? Classic! They started the match with 2 wrestlers, then randomly sent a new guy into the fray every 3 minutes. I can still remember Jesse Ventura saying "...and Bret Hart is *still* in that ring! He got the first draw and they haven't tossed him out yet!" That was the same WM that had the tournament for the World championship. Great storyline with Ted Dibiase and Andre. WM4 was my favorite one, easily.

"...hardly anyone ever gets up from a piledriver!"

Do they even do piledrivers anymore? It seems like, at some point, wrestling stopped using certain moves, like you mentioned. I remember in the 90's the piledriver went out, and power bomb was in.

They still do piledrivers, just not that often in the WWE these days. I think it's been banned for almost everyone. Petey Williams, who worked in TNA Wrestling for many years, still uses an insane somersault piledriver for his finish.

I remember Wrestlemania 4, too. As a young wrestling fan I was nuts about tournaments, and whenever they had one I thought it was cool. I like the ending to that battle royal, too, when Bad News double-crosses Bret and tosses him out to win, then Bret comes back in and smashes the trophy.
