Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 | 10:50 am (UTC) - Bill of Rights
What people get wrong about the Bill of Rights is, it describes the relationship of individuals to the government, not to one another. So for example, the government may not curtail religious exercise for its own purposes; the First Amendment disallows it. You as a citizen have rights; the government does not.

But when it comes to the rights of one individual vs. the rights of another individual, that's the point at which laws can and do restrict religion, free speech, gun ownership, etc. No right is absolute, not in a society involving more than one person, because my right to act will at some point affect other people.

This is why our society is built on civil rights and not individual rights: none of us as individuals have unlimited rights, so society instead has to try to come up with fair balances.
