Under the White Flag - The Off-Monday Ramble Episode 37
Monday, June 22nd, 2015 | 07:10 pm (UTC) - Monday rant
I'm from Canada. If I were a tourist visiting a southern state that flew a confederate flag, I would probably think it was just some historical thing about their part in the civil war. The idea that it could be taken as support for the 'good old days' of slavery would not likely have occurred to me before having seen your video. It is an interesting point though. If one flew a old Nazi flag in Germany, I'm sure that would not go over well at all. Beside being illegal, there is still a strong amount of guilt over what happened in Germany, and most people would be pretty disgusted and horrified. Perhaps that is the problem in the US, so much time has passed (no one alive today was around in those days), slavery isn't as bad as genocide (maybe, though it seems to me that the south did not feel much guilt over slavery), and people tend to look through the rose colored glasses of nostalgia for the old south. I do know that here in Canada these type of shooting events are rare. Out of all the advanced nations on this planet, only the US with their pro gun laws has this mass shooting problem. If you keep on doing what you always have been doing, you will always get the same result. Or as Einstein said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. US gun laws are not working.
